chapter twelve

Emma: Are you working? SOS.

Emma: I just ran into Nolan at the grocery store and he has a PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND.

“Shit,” Layla hissed, thumb smashing her recent calls log. She ignored Tyson’s questioning stare and paced the small strip between her coffee table and TV. When the call went to voicemail she immediately tried again.

This time someone answered. A very male “Hey” came through the speaker. It shocked her so much she pulled her phone from her face to check that she did, in fact, call Emma. The voice said something again and she pressed the phone against her ear.

“Who is this?” She asked.

“It’s Heath. Emma, uh… Emma called me earlier when she couldn’t get ahold of you. She’s sleeping now.”

Layla looked over at Tyson, who was leaned back on her bed wearing his birthday suit and a frown. Taking a breath she centered herself. “Is she okay?”

“As okay as she can be, I guess. She cried herself to sleep. I couldn’t get her to stop.”

She was restless, but she wanted a comforting touch so she crawled up on bed next to Tyson and rested her head against his chest. She didn’t need to ask Heath if he knew about Nolan and what happened between him and Emma. His normally goofy tone was replaced with a soft steady hum that made her heart ache.

“I’m sorry,” She whispered.

“Yeah, me too,” Heath muttered back. He cleared his throat. “I’ll tell her you called, okay?”

“Okay. Thanks, Heath. Take care of her, okay?”

His “of course” was so quiet she almost didn’t hear it.

The sound of his friend’s name had Tyson sitting up. He pulled her into his arms when she tossed her phone down at the foot of the bed. Kissing her neck he muttered, “Everything okay?”

“I don’t know,” Layla answered honestly. She pulled away from him and leaned her head against his shoulder. It wasn’t her story to tell, but she didn’t want him to think the worst. Whatever that would be. “Emma’s been going through some shit. She’s not having a good night, but she called Heath when I didn’t pick up.”

“He’s a good guy.”

“I don’t want him to hurt her,” Layla countered. The more she got to know Heath she didn’t really think he would, but the kid did say he was only taking their writing class to meet girls. It really wasn’t hard to think the worst of him as a stranger. As a kind of friend she was starting to see a different side of him.

“He’s going through his own shit. I don’t think he’d hurt her on purpose.”

Even if it wasn’t on purpose Layla didn’t want her best friend coming out the other end with a heart even more damaged, but she also didn’t want to fight with Tyson so she left it at that. She tossed a leg over his, hooking them together just so she could get closer, and looked up at him.

It had been a week since he stood in her doorway facing down Wade. A week since she decided to say fuck it and take whatever it was he could offer her.
